As I mentioned on TWITTER the other day, here is the post about a product I initially loved, had second thoughts about, and now absolutely hate.
For years, I was devoted to Cutex nail polish removers but about 3 weeks ago, I ran out of nail polish remover. In a panic mode, I was trailing the aisles of Sainsburys when I bought this.
For DRY BRITTLE NAILS, VITAMIN E and ALOE VERA? Perfect, my brain ticked.
So? well, it's basically a nail polish remover. There's no rocket science to it, nor was I worrying whether it would break me out ala face products. Those that know me, will know that my nails have always been very strong and they grow healthily at rocket speed.
I initially LOVED this. It made my nails feel strong, it did a marvelous job at removing the polish and best of all, it didn't have the strong acetone smell that Cutex may have. After several uses I felt my nails began to weaken, I put that down to my poor diet. Maybe I wasn't eating the right stuff? maybe my nails were just going through a phase? Regardless, I carried on using it.
As you can imagine, being a beauty junkie I change my nail colour about 2 times a week. Not only did my nails feel weak, I also began to notice that my nails were bending, chipping and most of all, peeling! Below is a picture, it's pretty gross but it looks far worse in real life. I noticed the top layers of my nails were peeling off AND my nails had stopped growing.
My nails began to feel sore and since these pictures (taken about 5 days ago) my nails have snapped off, YES snapped off. In fact one of my fingers snapped of so much that it hurts, the under flesh of the skin is showing and no surprise, it started to bleed.
It may just be me, but this is just a little warning, I wish I was told before I bought this. I learned the hard way. Back to Cutex it is....

Thanks for sharing this, this is the nail polish remover I also use and my nails are like that too! I've always had thin weak nails, but seeing your pics, my nails are slightly like that too!
ReplyDeleteI need some OPI nail treatment now!
Oh wow, I've always been a Cutex user...thanks for sharing this now I'm staying devoted to Cutex!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm im not entirely convinced your flaky nails are soley down to the polish remover...
ReplyDeleteAs well as diet, exercise etc do you use a good quality base coat? I think you should try OPI nail envy as it has done wonders for my nails and try a hair, skin and nails supplement. There are tons of good ones.....if you want advice on what one to get I can help you as I have tried most of them :P xo
Thanks a lot for sharing. I will stay away from this product for sure!
ReplyDeleteWoahthat does look horrible :x
ReplyDeletemy nails also do that sometimes. they start peeling, but I have no idea why.
OUCH!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that's horrible. :( I'll be sure to stay clear away from this...Rather disappointing for Sally Hansen...
ReplyDeletehope your nails get better soon this looks so painful ><
ReplyDeleteGosh, I didn't even consider that it could be the nail polish remover that I use. I also didn't think it was my diet. I thought it was my medications. However, now that I think about it - this happens to my nails on and off - not all th etime, and I've been on my meds for months and months now. And sometimes I get in the mood, where I do my nails twice a week and then I'll have weeks where I don't. I now am wondering if it does have something to do with the remover that I've been using! thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteYou should sue them!
ReplyDeleteoh gosh! I can imagine u hurting like a B*tch, thanks for sharing this with us!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about this! I hope your nails recover soon.
ReplyDeleteI have once used a herbal based nail polish remover that I got from Sasa. It is very nourishing to my nails and gives them a healthy color. I think the best kind of nail polish remover is the one that contains the least chemicals. Although I had to stop using it because of the smell (really weird vanilla-like scent), I am always looking out for better natral removers.

it is pretty gross. and my nails have been peeling too but not half as bad. =X
ReplyDeletei'm glad i read this because im using the strengthening version on this remover and it isnt doing any good and i just assumed it was because my nails were in really bad condition but maybe not. i'll be buying a new one now :)
ReplyDeleteomg! i hope your nails recover soon! Cutex is pretty good but i'm also really liking the Zoya nail polish remover, i'm not sure where you can buy it but my sister got it from a beauty expo that she went to, good stuff! :)
ReplyDeleteOuch sorry to your nails :(
ReplyDeleteOuch! That must have hurt like a m...! Am gonna steer clear away from it

ReplyDeleteI love change my nail colour too. But i 'm lazy to remove it. Luckily, i found a nail basecoat from neko. i have used it about 3-4 weeks and it is good to say bye with nail remover. Here is her blog : http://nekodot.jp/nail/7865/
ReplyDeleteAlso, it is write in cantonese.(maybe you need to translate that.)
omg, i got the same nail polish remover and my nails were peeling a bit too. i always thought maybe my nails were getting weak by constantly having nail polish on it. but now i know the real reason. thanks for sharing. :) hope your nails get better soon.
ReplyDeleteI use that too and feel your pain - switching asap!
ReplyDeleteHi, I've just started following your blog. You make me want to put more of an effort into my appearance! Hope your nails get better!
ReplyDeleteoh and thanks for the tip about the discount nail shop. got me some polishes today :))
My nails are exactly like yours in the photo.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I have never used this remover and even if I switch brands quite frequently(i just buy whatever...) they stay like that.
I did tried looking it up on google, but I couldn't find anything. So if you find a solution, please keep us updated! :D
I would recommend you look into taking Biotin, I took it a while growing out my pixie haircut and I was trimming my nails every four days they grew crazy fast.
ReplyDeleteoh no ><
ReplyDeletethanks for the heads up !!!
My god that's the reason....I got this remover too, and I met the same peeling problem!!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about the reason......hmmmm
Finally an answer!

oh dear I'm glad you've written about this. I normally used a superdrug branded nail polish remover n that was fine, Used this sally hansen one a few times and omg my nails were so so dry and flaky. (i generally have very strong nails which harldy ever break and they grow rather long too). i really do hate this nail polish remover as it was just horrible on my nails.
